Venous
Ablation Lab

Vein ablation is a minimally invasive vascular procedure that uses heat, laser, or chemical ablation to treat faulty veins, most commonly varicose veins. This technique can provide lasting relief for the symptoms of venous insufficiency and varicose veins.

Our Venous Ablation Services

Venous ablation is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that treats unhealthy veins, often the root cause of varicose veins, by safely closing them off. A tiny catheter delivers heat, laser energy, or a chemical solution into the affected vein, causing it to collapse. Once sealed, blood flows naturally through healthier veins, improving circulation and relieving symptoms.

At the Carolina Heart Specialists Venous Ablation Lab, you can expect:

  • Expert care from vascular-trained providers who walk you through each step
  • A comfortable, outpatient setting designed to make you feel at ease
  • Clear guidance before, during, and after your procedure to support recovery
  • Personalized follow-up care to help you maintain healthy vein function

Am I a Candidate for Venous Ablation?

In general, vein ablation is a good option for people who have varicose veins that are causing pain, discomfort, or other problems. Vein ablation is also a good option for people who have failed other treatments for varicose veins, such as compression stockings and lifestyle changes. Here are some factors that will be considered when determining if you are a candidate for vein ablation:

  • Symptomatic Venous Insufficiency: If you experience symptoms like swelling, pain, aching, or heaviness in your legs due to venous insufficiency, you might be a candidate for vein ablation.
  • Varicose Veins: Individuals with varicose veins, especially those causing discomfort or affecting daily activities, may benefit from vein ablation.
  • Failed Conservative Treatment: If conservative measures such as compression stockings and lifestyle changes haven't provided satisfactory relief, vein ablation could be a viable option.
  • Good Overall Health: Candidates should generally be in good health, without severe medical conditions that might hinder the procedure or recovery process.
  • Non-Pregnant Individuals: Pregnancy can influence vein conditions, so the procedure is often postponed until after childbirth.

What to Expect for Your Venous Ablation

Before the Procedure

We’ll review your medical history and medications and give you instructions on any needed medication changes. Vein ablation involves only a small numbing injection, so you’ll stay awake but comfortable.

During the Procedure

  • A tiny incision is made to insert a catheter into the vein.
  • Under ultrasound guidance, the catheter delivers heat (via laser or radiofrequency) or a chemical agent to close the vein.
  • The entire procedure typically lasts about 1 hour.

After the Procedure

  • You can go home the same day.
  • Walk soon after the treatment to support healing; avoid strenuous activities for about a week.
  • Wear compression stockings as advised, as this helps control swelling and speeds up recovery.

Benefits of Venous Ablation

Patients choose venous ablation for many reasons:

  • Improves blood flow, reducing symptoms like leg swelling, pain, and heaviness
  • Minimally invasive, with minimal scarring and quicker recovery compared to traditional surgery
  • Lasting results—the treated vein doesn’t return, although new varicose veins may still develop over time
